1928 50C Hawaiian PR64 NGC.
1928 50C Hawaiian PR64 NGC.<p>The Hawaiian Half Dollar is one of the keys to the U.S. Silver Commemorative set. The Act of March 7, 1928 authorized the Mint to produce 10,000 examples that would be sold to help finance the Captain Cook Memorial Collection in the Archives of Hawaii. The mintage was divided between 9,958 business strikes and 50 sandblast proofs. In the 1981 Encyclopedia of United States Silver and Gold Commemorative Coins: 1892-1954, Anthony Swiatek and Walter Breen list the original owners of all 50 presentation pieces. Unfortunately, the pedigree of the present near-Gem has been lost, but it is, nonetheless, an immensely important coin for the Commemorative specialist. The surfaces display a dove-gray sheen with microscopic granularity from the method of production. There are no handling marks that would seem to bar this attractive example from an even higher grade. NGC has gone against accepted practice and slabbed this coin with the native chief as the obverse and Captain Cook as the reverse.
