<B>1928 50C Hawaiian MS65 NGC.</B></I> Was Captain James Cook's expedition the first European group to reach Hawaii? Some historians believe Juan Gaetano, a Spanish mariner who had sailed the Pacific more than two centuries before Cook, found the islands in 1555, though his record-keeping is sufficiently imprecise that doubt prevails. In addition, Cook's return to Hawaii and his death there make his story compelling. Citrine, amber, amethyst, deep emerald, and other jewel-tones grace both sides of this well-preserved Hawaiian half.
