1928 (14 May). Archbishop Edward Byrne letter to Chief Justice Hugh Kennedy regarding Trinitry College - "still an institution to which a Catholic can go only at grave peril to his Faith"
typescript on embossed Archbishop's House Dublin notepaper, pp3
26 by 20cm., 10.2 5 by 8in.

The letter applauds Kennedy's efforts to protect Catholic minors who were wards of court and to prevent them from attending non-Catholic schools or universities: "Catholic parents who send their children to non-catholic schools...are acting directly in opposition to the laws of the Church" and "How the authorities of any Catholic school can....encourage their pupils to risk their souls' salvation in Trinity College is to me an absolutely insoluble puzzle". The letter illustrates the strong influence the Roman Catholic Church had upon the Irish Free State government and judiciary.
