1927 USS CONSTITUTION Restoration Marked WOOD
1927-Dated, USS CONSTITUTION Restoration Period, authentic Custom Made Wooden Section taken from USS CONSTITUTION, also known as “OLD IRONSIDES,” being removed directly from the Ship during its major restoration, Choice Extremely Fine.
This original Wooden Section measuring about 8” long x 2.5” tall x 2” deep that was cut and removed off the USS CONSTITUTION during its restoration, is identified being clearly and boldly punch stamped on its underside “ 1927 - USS CONSTITUTION.” Its origin on the ship is not exactly known, yet it appears to be a custom 2-piece attached handle or rail from an area which did not receive extensive heavy wear. It has a nice even overall deep chestnut color stain and patina which has excellent eye appeal. Various pieces and relics were removed and marked during the 1927 renovation as a means of fundraising. There are a number of examples on display at the USS CONSTITUTION Museum at Boston. Built between 1794 and 1797, the USS CONSTITUTION was launched at Boston Harbor, having been provided her name by then President George Washington. Much of her copper sheeting and hardware pieces were provided by Paul Revere. Later nicknamed “OLD IRONSIDES” when enemy cannonballs bounced off of her extremely hard thick wooden sides in battle. A lovely and unusual shaped custom piece of the USS CONSTITUTION for display.
