1927-S Peace Dollar PCGS MS65
Despite a limited original mintage of 866,000 pieces, the 1927-S is a readily obtainable Peace Dollar in baggy Mint State grades. This is because thousands of coins emerged from storage in the San Francisco Mint in the 1950s, while the Redfield Hoard (dispersed beginning in 1976) also contained a fair number of Uncirculated '27-S Dollar bags. Almost without exception, however, Mint State coins from these sources display enough bagmarks and/or a -- how shall we put it without trying to demean the poor coins - a cruddy strike -- to preclude a full Gem rating by today's standards. With uncommonly smooth surfaces and an overall bold strike that includes emerging definition in the centers, the coin in this lot may have entered numismatic channels from a source other than the San Francisco Mint or the Redfield Estate. It is bright. It is flashy. It almost glows in the dark! A gem for the Peace dollar connoisseur, if you understand where this is leading. And maybe one for the record books.
