1927-S Liberty Standing Quarter Dollar PCGS MS66
Fewer than 1% of the mintage of this rare issue are known with full head definition. It is far rarer as such than any other Standing Liberty quarter, except for the 1918-S overdate. And it must always be remembered that this issue is not found with the same depth of strike over Liberty's ear as, say, a 1927-P. There is always just a slight bit of softness in that area, even on the strongest 1927-S quarters.

With only 396,000 pieces produced, the 1927-S is the principal rarity among regular issue Standing Liberty quarters. It is even rarer than the 1916, even though almost eight times as many coins were struck as the 1916 was saved in larger numbers as a "first year" design. Apparently very few collectors ever dreamed of setting aside Mint State quarters in 1927 from the San Francisco mint since only a few dozen are extant today.

This nearly pristine Gem Mint State 66 1927-S Quarter is well preserved in every respect, with active not dullish, mark-free surfaces, booming cartwheel spin, and an above average strike. There is only a single little "tic" on Liberty's head and a mark on the lower feathers of the right wing near the body. Although the strike does not merit a Full Head description, it is nevertheless sharp overall with only localized areas of softness from the dies that are common to this later production issue. A remarkable Quarter rarity that will certainly become a favorite of its new owner. (#5764)
