Writing in 2000, David W. Lange observed: "[The] 1927-S is generally well struck for an S-mint Nickel of the 1920s…" Based on this comment, we believe that widespread circulation is more to blame for the paucity of high grade '27-S nickels than anything else, including poor striking quality. Since the PCGS Population of this issue falls off sharply above the MS-64 level, and the price level skyrockets to where most collectors cannot afford a gem '65, we anticipate considerable competition for this richly toned middle grade example among collectors. Both sides exhibit pleasing sandy-gold toning with intermittent strips of planchet streaking through the hair and obverse field.
