1927-S 5C MS65 NGC. Writing about the 1927-S Buffalo nickel in the September 16, 2003 Numismatic News, Paul Green says: "Its mintage of 3,430,000 suggests it is a better Buffalo nickel and it remains a better one in almost every grade. In Uncirculated the 1927-S becomes better and the higher the grade the better the 1927-S gets."
NGC and PCGS combined have certified a little more than 750 Mint State examples of this issue, most of which fall into the Select and near-Gem grade range. There is a sharp drop in numbers between MS64 and MS65, from approximately 400 of the former to about 35 of the latter. A solitary finer piece has been seen!
Bright luster adorns both sides of this lovely Gem, each of which displays pastel powder-blue, lilac, and golden-gray coloration. The strike is impressive, bringing sharp definition to all of the design elements. A couple of unobtrusive marks preclude an even higher grade. Census: 14 in 65, 1 finer (8/07).

Coin Engraver: James E.
