1927-S 5C MS64 PCGS. It is perhaps surprising for a 1920s Buffalo Nickel from the San Francisco Mint that the 1927-S is generally found with bold, if not sharp striking detail. This is a fact, nonetheless, and the present near-Gem is free of poor definition in all areas. Both sides are awash in dove-gray toning with whispers of pastel tinged undertones in powder-blue, apricot, and champagne colors. Probably kept from a full Gem grade by scattered flyspecks. The limited original mintage (3.4 million pieces) of the 1927-S Nickel no doubt led to widespread hoarding during the first few decades after delivery. While this date is common at well circulated and/or impaired levels of preservation, Lange (2000) states that Choice and Gem quality survivors are "genuinely rare."From the BTB Collection of Buffalo Nickels.
