1927-S 25C MS66 PCGS. Because of its very low min
1927-S<25C> MS66 PCGS. Because of its very low mintage (fewer than 400,000 pieces), the 1927-S quarter is a transcendent rarity among 20th century coinage; that is, a coin that is widely known outside specialists in this series. A few other coins are roughly analogous, such as the 1909-S VDB cent and the 1916-D dime, but of these the 1927-S is far scarcer as both an absolute and condition rarity. The only rival to the 1927-S among regular issue Standing quarters is the 1916, a coin that is scarcer in absolute numbers and more valuable, but one that also seems to turn up in public auction with greater frequency. This is an especially lovely coin that shows thick mint frost and light golden toning. The striking details on Liberty's head show the beginnings of completeness with most of the three sprigs evident. Elsewhere, the rivets on the shield and the eagle's belly show the softness of strike one would expect. Outstanding quality for the advanced collector of this fascinating series.
From The Western Hills Collection.
