It is far rarer as such than any other Standing Liberty quarter, except for the 1918-S overdate. Just over a dozen pieces appear to exist today in what PCGS or NGC would grade MS64 Full Head or better. And it must always be remembered that this issue is not found with the same strength of strike over Liberty's ear, as say, a 1927-P. There is always just a slight bit of softness in that area, even on the strongest 1927-S quarters. Of less interest, but equally important in determining the authenticity of a high grade 1927-S, the breast feathers on the eagle are consistently weak also, even when the outer wing definition is strong. We mention these two areas of weakness not to disparage the issue by any means, but rather to make viewers aware of the striking characteristics of this issue, as mintmarks have been added to 1927-P coins (which have different striking characteristics, as mentioned) and even cast counterfeits are known. That, of course, is not a concern to anyone contemplating the purchase of this coin as it has been authenticated by PCGS.<BR>This is a lovely coin that has smooth mint frost that is accented by a medium density overlay of reddish-golden patina on the obverse, and slightly lighter coloration on the reverse. The reverse die was lightly striated and appears to have been die clashed also. The only marks we see are a couple of tiny abrasions on Liberty's right (facing) leg, but a strong magnifier will be necessary to find them, and they are probably not noticeable enough to be used as pedigree identifiers.<BR>An outstanding example of this important strike rarity and absolute rarity in the Standing Liberty quarter series. Population: 10 in 64, 3 finer (10/03). </FONT></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><BR><A name=PricesRealized></A><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" bgColor=#000000 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%"><TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=3 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%" bgColor=#79735c><A name=PR><FONT face=arial color=#ffffff size=3><B>Previous Prices from Heritage Auctions</B> </FONT></A></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#f6f6ed><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=1><TBODY><TR><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Date</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Service</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Price</B></TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>07/30/2002</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$48,875.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>02/11/2000</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$46,000.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>03/01/1997</B></TD><TD width="33%">ANACS</TD><TD width="33%">$29,700.00</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff><FONT face=arial size=1 ?>PLEASE NOTE: All prices realized reflect the final hammer price PLUS the buyer's premium in auctions that charge a buyer's premium. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. </span></font></tr></table></td></tr></table>
