1927-S 25C MS64 Full Head PCGS. The 1927-S is a key issue in the Standing Liberty Quarter series that actually survives at the Uncirculated level in smaller numbers than its more famous first year counterpart, the much lower mintage 1916. Of the small quantity that was spared from decades of circulation, it is doubtful that more than two or three percent qualify for a Full Head designation, placing the '27-S Quarter on the same rarity plane as even the '18/7-S Overdate Quarter in the Full Head category. The example offered here could hardly be exceeded in eye appeal by the handful of Gems that have survived. Although it is a trifle flat on the highpoint of the shield as is nearly every other example that we have ever seen, it is extraordinarily well struck on Liberty's head and on all four digits of the date. The surfaces exhibit vibrant mint luster that shimmers uninterrupted across both sides and are mostly brilliant save for a splash of pale multicolored toning to the right of the date and a pair of similarly colorful streaks on the reverse. A memorable example of this prized late-date Standing Liberty Quarter. Population: 15 in 64, 3 finer (10/02). Ex: October 2000 Long Beach Sale (Heritage 10/00), lot 6211, where it realized a whopping $51,750. From the Chicagoland Collection.
