1927-S<25C> MS64 Full Head PCGS. Less than 1% of the mintage of this rare issue is known with full head definition. As such, it is far rarer than any other Standing Liberty quarter, except for the 1918/7-S overdate. PCGS and NGC together have certified about two dozen pieces in MS64 Full Head or better. This issue is not found with the same strength of strike over Liberty's ear, as say, a 1927-P. There is always a slight bit of softness in that area, even on the strongest 1927-S quarters. Of less interest, but equally important in determining the authenticity of a high grade 1927-S, the breast feathers on the eagle are also consistently weak, even when the outer wing definition is strong.
This lovely coin has smooth mint frost accented by strong mint luster and a hint of light peripheral gold, with slightly lighter hues on the reverse. The only noteworthy marks are a couple of tiny abrasions, one on Liberty's left (facing) leg in the middle of her calf, another nearby on the center fold of her dress above the 2 in the date. On the reverse there is a tiny nick within the feathers on the left wing of the eagle. The 1927-S quarter suffered from two forces: the first is that few were produced. A mere 396,000 coins were struck that entire year. They were not well struck, and even those saved at the time of issue are seldom found with a strike approaching the quality seen here. Population: 9 in 64 Full Head, 5 finer (4/06).
