1927-S<25C> MS64 Full Head PCGS. Fewer than 1% of the mintage of this rare issue are known with full head definition. It is far rarer as such than any other Standing Liberty quarter, except for the 1918-S overdate. Just over two dozen pieces appear to exist today in what PCGS or NGC would grade MS64 Full Head or better. And it must always be remembered that this issue is not found with the same strength of strike over Liberty's ear, as say, a 1927-P. There is always just a slight bit of softness in that area, even on the strongest 1927-S quarters. Of less interest, but equally important in determining the authenticity of a high grade 1927-S, the breast feathers on the eagle are consistently weak also, even when the outer wing definition is strong. We mention these two areas of weakness not to disparage the issue by any means, but rather to make viewers aware of the striking characteristics of this issue.
This is a lovely coin that has smooth mint frost that is accented by strong mint luster and a hint of light peripheral gold, and slightly lighter hues on the reverse. The reverse die shows clash marks extending up from the eagle's wings. The only marks we see are a couple of tiny abrasions, one on Liberty's right leg in the middle of her calf, another nearby on the center fold of her dress above the 2 in the date, on the reverse there is a tiny nick within the feathers on the left wing of the eagle. The 1927-S quarter suffered from two forces, the first is that few were produced, a mere 396,000 coins were struck that entire year. In addition, they were not well struck, and even those saved from the time of issue are seldom found with a strike that even approaches the quality seen here. Add to this the normal trials and tribulations of economic upheavals and the pending Great Depression which began in late 1929 and continued for much of the following decade. Clearly few were saved from this tiny issue, and collectors must pay dearly to obtain a stunning Full Head and Choice example as seen here.
An outstanding example of this important strike rarity and key date rarity in the Standing Liberty quarter series. Population: 10 in 64, 5 finer (11/05).
