1927-S 25C MS63 Full Head NGC. The 1927-S can be compared to the Denver mint of this same year. Not in terms of overall rarity, for the 1927-S is several times rarer than the '27-D. But the two are similar in that both started out softly struck in the centers, as a rule. With that as a beginning point, it is highly improbable that any significant number of coins were struck with complete head definition. Of course, only 396,000 pieces were struck of the 1927-S, which means that if this issue had a normal number of Full Head survivors it would still be the scarcest Full Head coin in the series. That was not the case, however, and Cline estimates that a paltry 1% were actually struck with complete head details.
As a backhanded compliment to the rarity of this issue, Cline also notes that numerous counterfeits and altered mintmarks exist. In his fourth edition of Standing Liberty Quarters, he lists the characteristics of some of these manufactured rarities. This attractive example has all the characteristics one would expect from a 1927-S. Bright surfaces, central striking weakness, and a strong, clear mintmark. Each side is covered with medium density mauve-blue toning. There are no singularly mentionable or detracting marks on either side. Only two other pieces have been so graded by NGC, with 11 coins in finer condition (MS64-66). This is a rare opportunity for the specialist to acquire a Full Head 1927-S quarter in a pleasing Uncirculated grade with problem-free surfaces.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
