1927-S<$20> MS64 PCGS. As previously noted, the '27-S is one of the rarest issues in the Saint-Gaudens series of double eagles. Of the known certified specimens, fewer than 20 are graded MS64 by PCGS and NGC combined, and about the same number of higher grades coins have been seen. Likewise, five near-Gems, and six pieces grading higher, have appeared in major auctions over the past ten to fifteen years.
The near-Gem offered in the present lot displays rich apricot-gold patina that becomes a shade or two deeper around the rims and over portions of the reverse. Each side is awash in blazing luster, and the design elements are sharply struck throughout. A handful of unobtrusive marks does not detract in the least from the overall eye appeal of this lovely S-Mint specimen. Population: 5 in 64, 8 finer (9/05).
From The Phillip H.
