1927-S $20 MS64 PCGS. During the 1940s, specialists in United States gold assigned an extremely high rarity ranking to the 1927-S, behind only the 1924-S, 1926-D, and 1926-S. Of course, why the 1927-D was not included among the top four Saint-Gaudens issues is a bit perplexing. Shipments of gold coins that returned to the United States from Europe since the 1950s have substantially reordered the rarity scale among later issues in this series. Despite the emergence of a few examples of this issue, however, numismatists generally believe that there are no more than 80-100 Mint State specimens extant today. While the majority of these pieces are marred by unsightly carbon spots and/or heavy bagmarks, this lovely near-Gem is certainly among the more attractive representatives of its issue. In fact, a small, shallow lamination within the left obverse field and the characteristic circular die crack that joins LIBERTY to the date are the only disruptions worthy of note on the otherwise smooth faces. The strike is noteworthy for its strength with abundant frosty brilliance over both the fields and the devices. The obverse of this specimen displays vibrant orange-gold toning with soft undertones of green-gold coloration. The reverse, on the other hand, carries a warm blanket of copper-gold patination that recedes slightly to yellow-gold in the field about the eagle's head.
