1927-S $20 MS63 PCGS. While the extreme rarity

1927-S $20 MS63 PCGS. While the extreme rarity of the 1927-D Saint may overshadow its S-mint counterpart, anyone who has tracked the Saint-Gaudens series over the past few decades knows that the latter issue is also a rarity deserving of great respect. Prior to the emergence of a few examples in Europe during the 1960s and 1970s, many gold specialists regarded the 1927-S as the fourth rarest Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle after the 1924-S, 1926-D, and 1926-S. Overseas holdings that have since been repatriated necessitated a realignment in the relative rarity of many issues in this series, the '27-S included. The number of examples found in Europe, however, was significantly fewer than those for most other S-mint issues from the 1920s. In fact, Akers (1988) states that findings of this issue have never approached roll quantity, let alone that of a hoard. The situation has altered very little over the last 15 years. Offered here is a Select, blatantly original example whose eye appeal meets or exceeds its technical merits. The strike is noteworthy for its consistent strength and there is an abundance of frosty brilliance. Blushes of appealing orange patina are particularly apparent on the reverse. Listen for a slight buzz when this challenging Saint-Gaudens rarity crosses the auction block. Population: 17 in 63, 13 finer (3/04).

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT RESERVES: Heritage now divulges all reserves on its web site 7 days before every auction.
