1927-S $20 MS63 PCGS. During the 1940s, collector
1927-S<$20> MS63 PCGS. During the 1940s, collectors regarded this issue as the fourth rarest Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle after only the 1924-S, 1926-D, and 1926-S. As gold specialists know all too well, the shipments of gold coins that returned to the United States from Europe since the 1950s have substantially reordered the rarity scale among later issues in this series. Despite the emergence of a few examples of this issue, however, numismatists generally believe that there are no more than sixty Mint State specimens extant today.
While the majority of these pieces are marred by unsightly spots and/or heavy bagmarks, this Select specimen is certainly among the more attractive representatives of its issue. In fact, a couple of marks on Liberty's leg and the eagle's feathers are the only disruptions worthy of note on the otherwise smooth faces. The strike is noteworthy for its strength with abundant frosty brilliance over both the fields and the devices. Both the obverse and reverse exhibit soft peripheral shadings of green-gold coloration. In addition to the overall rarity of its issue, therefore, this piece is also significant among gold enthusiasts as a memorable condition rarity that is worthy of a equally memorable bid. Population: 22 in 63, 13 finer (5/05).
