1927-S $20 MS61 NGC. The 1927-S double eagle is clearly not in the same class as its cousin, the 1927-D, yet it still ranks as one of the rare dates in the Saint-Gaudens double eagle series. The mintage of more than 3 million coins suggests nothing but a common date; however, it must be remembered that these coins remained in storage and never entered circulation. Some were stored in Treasury vaults and eventually found an unwelcome home in government melting pots, while a few others were exported. Only a tiny fraction of the mintage wound up in the hands of collectors, and those are the pieces that survive today.
This Mint State piece has brilliant and frosty yellow luster with a few scattered marks that are consistent with the grade. The strike is bold, especially evident on the obverse. Like all survivors, the obverse and reverse rims are beveled. Census: 15 in 61, 69 finer (1/08).

Coin Engraver: Augustus Saint-Gaudens

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
