1927<$20> MS67 PCGS. As we saw in the introduction to the 1927 double eagle, this is the second most common issue in the Saint-Gaudens series, and the combined certified population is nearly 191,000 coins! Even MS65 and MS66 pieces are readily available. The situation changes in the MS67 grade, where only 32 examples have been certified, some of which are undoubtedly resubmissions (9/05). No specimens grading finer have as yet been seen by either grading service. Moreover, according to our records, only 11 Superb Gems have made auction appearances within the last ten years.
The example offered in the present lot is beautiful to behold. Variegated mint-green and brass-gold patination, imbued with occasional lavender accents, is draped over each side. Blazing luster seems to jump right off the surfaces of this stellar double eagle, and rarely is this date found with such intense radiance. The design elements are exquisitely struck, the only exception being minor softness on portions of the Capitol dome. To add to the fantastic eye appeal, the surfaces are remarkably clean, particularly on the obverse. A couple of small, unobtrusive marks at 9 o'clock on the reverse rim serve to pedigree the piece. Population: 12 in 67, 0 finer (9/05).
From The Phillip H. Morse Collection of Saint-Gaudens Coinage.
