1927 $2 1/2 MS65 PCGS. The 1927, with a business strike mintage of 388,000 pieces, is a common date in the Indian quarter eagle series, yet it is decidedly uncommon in strict Gem condition. It can be obtained without much difficulty in MS64 or lower grade, but MS65 specimens cannot be found in any great quantity. As with all of the Pratt $2 1/2 and $5 issues, there is a dramatic drop-off in availability above MS65 condition, and for all practical purposes Superb quality examples, though they do exist, are virtually unobtainable. According to our records, the major auction houses have offered only three MS66 examples in the past ten years.
The specimen in this lot is sharply struck on all of the design elements, with only portions of the Indian's hair at the temple revealing a touch of softness. Bright orange-gold patina with subtle greenish undertones visits lustrous surfaces on each side. No mentionable marks are apparent on the motifs, but what is even more surprising is that the fields, which are exposed due to the sunken relief design, are virtually devoid of noticeable contact marks. This is a coin with great eye appeal!
From The H.R. Luchs Collection.
