1926-S 5C MS65 NGC. Writing in 2000, David Lange reports that the 1924-S and 1926-S have the lowest certified Mint State populations in the Buffalo Nickel series. At the Gem level, the rarity edge easily goes to the 1926-S with just 13 coins graded MS65 at NGC and PCGS combined (there is just one finer, 10/02) and, indeed, Lange states that this issue is "nearly unknown" in Gem. Undoubtedly one of the first coins struck from a well spaced die pair, the present example is free of the excessive softness of detail that often plagues survivors of this issue. In fact, the strike is bold, if not sharp in all areas with particularly impressive definition over the letters in the word LIBERTY on the obverse. It may seem odd that an issue that is known as a strike rarity is also known for high quality planchet stock and vibrant luster, but that is the case with the '26-S. As one should expect, this coin is free of as struck distractions with a pleasingly satin sheen beneath well blended golden-tan and orange-gray shadings. There are also blushes of pale emerald-green color on the obverse over and before the Indian's profile and at the back of the forehead. Distracting carbon is typically minimal for the assigned grade, and the surfaces are silent on the subject of noticeable abrasions. With the lowest mintage (970,000 pieces) of the type, it should come as no surprise that the 1926-S is the undisputed key to this popular and widely collected 20th century series.
