1926-S $20 MS65 PCGS. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth (2006)
1926-S $20 MS65 PCGS. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth (2006) write: "...the 1926-S double eagle suffered the same fate as its Denver brother of the same year. The rather impressive mintage (2,041,500 pieces) was all but obliterated from the public's hands, though a few have turned up in overseas bank hoards." A thousand or so Mint State coins have been reported by PCGS and NGC in the MS60 to MS64 range. Gems are elusive, however, with fewer than 40 coins certified, along with a mere seven finer.
The MS65 1926-S example in the current lot displays "flashy" apricot-gold surfaces with a frost-like finish. Sharply defined motifs are apparent on Liberty's face and in the fingers of both hands, as well as on the eagle's feathers. A small linear mark to the right of the Y in LIBERTY may aid in identifying the piece for pedigree purposes. Population: 19 in 65, 2 finer (10/06).
From The Kutasi Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
