1926-S $20 MS65 PCGS. Despite a relatively high mintage of 2 million coins, the 1926-S is a challenging date to locate in Gem or better condition. Most of this issue was melted in the 1930s due to events tied to the Great Depression. The 1926-S Saint-Gaudens double eagles that escaped the melting pots, including examples returned to the United States from European bank hoards in recent decades, were handled with little care and usually display bagmarked surfaces. As such, this date is rare in grades above MS64. In fact, PCGS has bestowed the Gem grade to only 24 examples of this date (4/07), a figure probably somewhat inflated due to resubmissions. The handful of Gem examples that survived likely originated with wealthy collectors of that era with enough foresight and financial wherewithal to obtain--and retain--an example or two. This specimen offers attractive sunset-orange surfaces on each side, with cascading cartwheel luster and a noteworthy lack of singular abrasions. The bold strike has brought up all major details well, although minor softness is seen on the Capitol building. Population: 24 in 65, 2 finer (4/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
