1926-S 1C MS64 Red and Brown PCGS
1926-S 1C MS64 Red and Brown PCGS. The 1926-S is an issue that in the higher Mint State grades seems to be showing more and more strength as time goes by and generations of Lincoln cent collectors show unflagging interest. There is only a single Gem Red certified at PCGS. Near-Gem Red coins are becoming increasingly out of reach for many collectors, leaving the seldom-seen MS65 Red and Brown and MS64 Red and Brown pieces at the top of the scale of available examples.
This coin shows remarkably few poststrike impairments, but it is struck from a severely fatigued obverse die and a reverse die that shows fewer signs of erosion. The 6 and mintmark show notable weakness, with metal flowlines obvious behind the president's bust. Much of the fine detail is effaced on the upper hair, the ear, and the beard. The AM in AMERICA on the reverse are beginning to disappear, the most obvious sign of die fatigue on that side. On the positive side, there is no evidence of carbon, significant contact, or other poststrike impairment. While it is a debatable point, the coin appears high-end in terms of technical merit, and without the advanced die erosion would almost certainly have garnered a Gem grade.

Coin Engraver: Victor D.
