1926-D<$20> MS62 PCGS. Only 481,000 double eagles were struck at the Denver Mint in 1926. From the scant number of survivors today, it appears most of these were retained in the United States, and subsequently melted in the mid-1930s. Apparently, none were sent overseas, as no hoards or significant accumulations have been discovered over the past 50 years. The surfaces on this select example display vibrant luster overlain in lovely yellow-golden patina. There are a number of small, but unobtrusive marks over both sides that keep this eye appealing specimen from the Select category. Worth a close look by the gold specialist. Population: 55 in 62, 77 finer (5/06).
