1926 50C Sesquicentennial MS66 PCGS. Ex: Shepherd. Though John Sinnock's training would have allowed him to model the John Frederick Lewis designs in higher relief, the distributors insisted otherwise, and the Sesquicentennial ended up in a virtual tie with the Monroe for shallowest relief and worst strike. In addition, the final design created broad areas that could result in numerous abrasions; one of them was Washington's cheek, which had major consequences for collectors and graders. Even today, Gems remain elusive, and anything finer is a condition rarity.
When Heritage last offered this delightful Premium Gem in January 2004, the cataloger wrote: "The luster is exceptionally vibrant for the type, being frosty with swirling cartwheel effects. The toning is blatantly original, bold, and complex, all without distracting from or obscuring the original design." Three years later, the coin remains equally impressive. Deep gold-orange and ruby-crimson toning graces each side, and occasional glints of lime-green add variety to the color palette. NGC has certified no Superb Gems. Population: 7 in 66, 0 finer (2/07).
From The Cary & Cheryl Porter Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
