<B>1926 50C Sesquicentennial MS65 PCGS.</B></I> The mint occasionally overestimates how popular certain coins will be with the public. That happened to proofs from 1859-1860, modern mint products, and it certainly happened with the Sesquicentennial half dollar. Just over a million pieces were struck in anticipation of brisk sales at $1 per coin, but 859,408 pieces were returned to the mint to be melted. Of those 140,592 pieces sold, few were set aside in pristine condition.
