1926 $2 1/2 Sesquicentennial MS66 PCGS. Unlike the classic silver commemoratives, which saw their share of financial successes, the classic gold commemoratives were poor sellers without exception. The Sesquicentennial quarter eagle of 1926, with its net mintage of 46,019 pieces, seems like a rousing success compared to the totals achieved for other gold issues. Still, that number fell far short of the authorized mintage of 200,000 pieces, all of which were actually struck and most of which were later melted, resulting in considerable expense for the government.
This attractive straw-gold and butter-yellow representative is a Premium Gem, unusually high-end for this issue, notorious for its elusive nature in MS65 and better grades. The fields offer vibrant luster, the devices are surprisingly bold, and the surfaces as a whole are carefully preserved. Appealing and important. The Registry collector should note that PCGS acknowledges no finer representatives (10/07).
From The Fleur Wales-Baillie Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
