1926<$2 1/2> Sesquicentennial MS66 PCGS. This example is tied for the finest certified by PCGS. The net mintage of the Sesquicentennial quarter eagle, 46,019, amounted to one-third of the total net mintage of all gold commemorative coins issued from 1903 to 1926. We used the term net mintage to represent the actual coins released or distributed, as some commemorative issues had substantially higher initial mintages, but with considerable numbers melted after remaining unsold. This issue is a perfect example, as the initial mintage totaled 200,226 coins, with 154,207 of those melted at a later date, leaving the net mintage of 46,019 coins.
This Premium Gem is a splendid example of John Sinnock's design. It is sharply struck, and has highly lustrous orange-gold color on frosty surfaces. Both sides have faint olive tones at the borders. A few microscopic tick marks are expected, but the surfaces are essentially pristine. Population: 84 in 66, 0 finer (5/06).
