1926 $10 MS66 PCGS. While the 1926 is widely recognize
1926 $10 MS66 PCGS. While the 1926 is widely recognized as the second most common ten Indian, this is an uncommonly fine example. As a rule, the 1926 is found with excellent luster but heavy bagmarks limit most coins to the MS63-64 grade range. Literally thousands of pieces are available in those grades, but the numbers known drops sharply at the MS65 level to 700 or so. But the really precipitous decline is seen at the next grade level, that of the present piece, where only eight coins have been certified by PCGS and 35 by NGC. It is also worthy of note that there are no coins graded finer at either of the major services. As pointed out in The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse Collection, " ... there is no universally recognized, single-finest example of the 1926." If one measures finest known by the highest price an MS66 has brought, then that honor goes to the coin that sold for $14,950 in Heritage's September 2003 Long Beach Sale.
This particular piece is especially clean for the grade. The only marks are hidden in the upper feathers of the headdress. Otherwise, the surfaces are exceptionally clean and show what we refer to as "Kutasi color," that is, an original, untampered coin with rich reddish patina and varying amounts of lilac interspersed, especially in the recesses and in the fields. Well defined throughout. This is surely one of the finest 1926 tens known, a fact that will undoubtedly be borne out by the price it realizes.
From The Kutasi Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
