1925-S 5C MS65 PCGS. This is one of the finest example
1925-S 5C MS65 PCGS. This is one of the finest examples of the date that we have handled. Indeed, it is only exceeded by a single coin that has received a finer grade by PCGS. This piece is sharply struck for the issue, with exceptional obverse and reverse detail. For example, LIBERTY is bold and sharp, completely separated from the border. The date is complete, and even the vertical split in the bison's front leg is visible.
David Lange discussed this issue in his guide to the series, The Complete Guide to Buffalo Nickels: "Low-end Mint State coins are scarce, while fully struck Choice and Gem pieces are genuinely rare. ... Overall weakness is the norm for this issue, particularly in the bison's head and around the coin's periphery. It seems that both broad set distances between the dies and overextended usage of the dies combined to produced so many miserable coins. ... 1925-S nickels typically have just average to good luster. In combination with their generally mushy appearance, the aesthetic value of this issue is low, regardless of its certified grade."
Now that the general appearance of this issue has been discussed, it is important to understand that the present Gem is absolutely an exception to the rule. This piece has remarkable satin luster with attractive light gold color. It is far above average for its aesthetic appearance, with fully brilliant surfaces on both sides. For the collector who reaches beyond numerical grade designations, and considers strike, luster, surfaces, and aesthetic appeal, this is quite an opportunity. Population: 17 in 65, 1 finer (2/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
