1925-S 5C MS65 NGC. The 1925-S is one of the premier strike rarities in the Buffalo Nickel series. Improperly spaced dies combined with the fact that most dies were retained in the press long after they had become excessively worn explains why so many examples display indistinct detail over the bison's head and around the peripheries. This cataloger has even seen a 1925-dated Buffalo Nickel from one of the branch mints that was so poorly impressed on the reverse that the mintmark was an indistinguishable blob. We are willing to bet that it was a '25-S. If that unfortunate example was the greatest disaster story of this S-mint Buffalo Nickel delivery, then this amazing Gem is most likely its greatest success story. In fact, after examining the strike and noting that the date is 1925, one may be surprised to see the S mintmark below FIVE CENTS on the reverse! The obverse is sharply defined throughout with particularly impressive detail on the hair above the ribbon and the letters in LIBERTY (each of which is full and distinct from the rim). The reverse is no less impressive with a distinct horn, appreciably split tail end, and emerging definition over the top of the bison's head. All other features on that side are sharp, if not full. Now for the aesthetic appeal. Both sides are beautifully toned with more or less even orange-red peripheral shadings around warm lavender-gray centers. The shimmering luster is uncommonly vibrant for the date, and the surfaces are free of singularly mentionable abrasions and carbon flecks. A tiny swirl of slightly deeper color over and below the Indian's mouth (it is only really visible under a loupe) is the most suitable pedigree marker that we can find. Combined NGC and PCGS population for the 1925-S Nickel in MS65 is only 27 coins, and there is a lone MS66 PCGS example finer (10/02).
