1925-S 5C MS64 PCGS. The 1925-S is a very elusive
1925-S<5C> MS64 PCGS. The 1925-S is a very elusive coin with any degree of completeness of strike. The vast majority of high grade survivors are miserably struck, and if that is not enough the mint luster is poor as well. To further underscore the poor quality usually encountered, David Lange said in his Complete Guide to Buffalo Nickels, said, "Collectors, whatever their budget, buy this date simply to complete their sets." With this coin, however, no apologies are necessary, and it certainly is not a "hole-filler" as indicated by Lange in the quote above. This is a remarkably well struck 1925-S. The obverse is well defined, although certainly not complete, but the reverse is what is truly remarkable. The matted hair over the bison's horn is almost fully defined, and there is a full split in the end of the bison's tail. The mint luster is soft and frosted, and each side has rich golden-brown patina with thin rings of iridescence around the obverse periphery and a touch of lilac here and there around the reverse margin. This is a coin that should be carefully considered by the Buffalo nickel specialist because of its strength of strike, even though it is "only" an MS64.
