1925-S $20 St. Gaudens NGC MS65
1925-S $20 St. Gaudens. NGC graded MS-65. A beautiful untoned example. Rare in MS65. Without the slightest hesitation we proclaim this to be a coin that nearly defies belief for a 1925-S Saint-Gaudens $20 gold piece. Both sides are very well preserved for this often bagmarked issue, the surfaces display smooth features over both sides. We find no distracting abrasions, and the surfaces gleam with luster and golden color, almost touching on the pristine. The importance of the surface preservation is accomplished by the presence of thick, swirling, satin-like luster. How this remained untouched over the years is unknown, but everyone who sees it will agree that the coin appears as bright and fresh as the day the dies struck it. No deviation in the sharp relief seen, either, not even in the centers of the coin. One of the most impressive 1925-S double eagles we have ever offered in an auction sale.

Despite a mintage approaching 4 million pieces, the 1925-S is among of the elusive S-mint dates in both an absolute sense (perhaps as few as 300 survive) and in grade ranking. Most examples are heavily abraded, as we noted, with the result that this issue is believed to be the rarest Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle in Gem Mint State after the 1920-S, 1921, 1926-D (and of course, the 1933). If your collecting passion is Saint-Gaudens $20 gold, it would be wise to bid it up as the prospect of acquiring a better coin may not present itself for years. Pop 2; 2 finer, 1 in 66, 1 in 67 (PCGS # 9182) .
Estimated Value $100,000 - 110,000.
