1925-S $20 MS63 PCGS. Many of the rarest Saint-Gaudens double eagles have high mintages, including the '25-S. All of these rarities, usually from Denver or San Francisco, were subject to massive destruction by the government in the 1930s, after President Franklin D. Roosevelt took the country off the gold standard. In most cases, the coins were struck but never released. They remained in Mint or Treasury vaults since the time of issue, ending up in the melting pot during the mid to late 1930s.
This example is one of the few coins actually released. It was either set aside by a collector in the late 1920s, or it spent several decades in Europe before its return. While each side has a few scattered surface marks that are consistent with the grade, the surfaces are fully brilliant with satiny orange-gold luster. Population: 72 in 63, 22 finer (6/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
