1925-S<10C> MS67 Full Bands PCGS. Lange's Mercury dime reference states that he and many other experts believe the 1925-S holds the record for the most poorly made date in the entire series. He adds: "Both obverse and reverse [are] plagued by heavy die polishing and erosion and a generally weak strike throughout." This brilliant coin shows considerable evidence of die overuse. Heavy die lapping and subsequent erosion have given the obverse and reverse of this coin a satiny luster. In contrast, burnishing of the die in front of Liberty's face has created a highly brilliant, prooflike patch of luster known as "die burn." A wispy die crack runs from the bottom rim through Liberty's neck, up through her face, and nearly to the top of the wing. Overzealous reverse die lapping has effaced some greenery stems to the right of the fasces, so that they "float" in air. Despite these various signs of die fatigue, this remains a phenomenal coin that well deserves its PCGS grade. A diligent perusal of the obverse under magnification exposes only a single dot indentation above Liberty's head, with slight central strike softness. On the reverse, more scrutiny reveals a single tick on one vertical rod, a luster graze in the left field, and softness on the E on ONE. The central bands, indeed the entire fasces, are bold. One of the chosen few at this level, and completely insuperable in quality.
