1925 Rose Bowl Program featuring The 4 Horsemen
1925 Rose Bowl Program featuring The Four Horsemen. Presented here is one of the toughest and most desirable football programs in the hobby, present in only the most advanced of collections. The reasons for its scarcity are not tough to imagine. First and foremost, we must consider that it's over eight decades old! And secondly, the rather delicate paper stock that was used in its construction makes it far more susceptible to the perils of age than contemporary World Series programs, for example. As such, only a scant few specimens from this Southern California event have survived. The intense desirability of the program is related most directly to the appearance of college football's storied backfield of Stuhldreher, Layden, Crowley and Miller, dubbed by famed sportswriter Grantland Rice as "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse." Fine images of the quartet, both individually and as a group, appear within this amazing eighteen-page publication. The Horsemen did not disappoint their coach Knute Rockne this day, cruising to a twenty-seven to ten win over Ernie Nevers' Stanford Cardinals in the Fighting Irish's first and only Rose Bowl appearance. The program shows an expected degree of wear, with a vertical center fold and some short horizontal tears that do not extend past the wide white borders of the interior pages. Somehow the cover has been spared the bulk of these flaws, and it presents remarkably well as a result. The binding remains tight, keeping the program solid and complete. A wait for another, much less a finer example, will surely be a long one.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 22.5% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. This lot is being auctioned in conjunction with a live floor auction by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers. All final auction and invoice information will be supplied by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers, and all other information should be considered preliminary.
