1925 Knute Rockne's Presentational Humidor Signed by Rockne, Pop Warner & Tad Jones. It was back in May 2006 that Heritage auctioned a sister piece to the humidor we present here, clearly deriving from the same event and bearing the same trio of collegiate gridiron legends. Though we will admit that the earlier offering presented bolder signatures, as well as the addition of the great Jim Thorpe, this particular example has appeal that the former example couldn't possibly match. Applied to the wooden base of this unique keepsake is a brass plaque with the engraving, "Knute K. Rockne, Compliments of Christy Walsh." Our consignor, who lives just six miles from South Bend, Indiana, discovered this special piece at a local flea market, and realized the plaque denoted this humidor as Rockne's personal model. She was then able to track down an image of Rockne holding the humidor, locking down the provenance to the ultimate degree. The three signatures that are boldly visible in the image are quite a bit lighter now, perhaps 2/10, but are still legible and unmistakable, with each signer adding the school he represents--Notre Dame, Stanford and Yale respectively--after his autograph. A sticker affixed inside the humidor details the event that spawned the piece, reading, "Knute Rockne's Souvenir, All America Football Dinner, Appreciation to my Newspaper Friends, and in Honor of Knute Rockne, Tad Jones, Glenn Warner, Fielding Yost and my Other Associates, Christy Walsh, Hotel Commodore, New York, Nov. 30, 1925." A bit of the lacing at the exterior has been lost to the ravages of time, but otherwise the humidor has weathered the passing decades quite well, and would surely serve its intended purpose of cigar maintenance well. As one of the few personally owned pieces of Rockne memorabilia to reach the auction block, and an autographed piece besides, the appeal of the offered lot should be evident to all. LOA from PSA/DNA.
