1925 JAPANESE EARTHQUAKE PICTORIAL EDITION
A 1925 edition of the 'Earthquake Pictorial Edition (Tajima, Tango District)', published by the Osaka Mainichi, 1925, approx. 80 pages, 12 x 8.5 inches. Book is unbound and some pages have minor tears and loss along margins. The booklet contains numerous maps and photographs of the aftermath of the earthquake showing aerial shots of destroyed areas, collapsed buildings, refugees, and rescue organizations with captions in Japanese and English. After the 1925 North Tajima earthquake the Japanese government officially reported 428 fatalities, 1,016 injured, 7,863 buildings destroyed, and 45,659 houses damaged by collapse or fire. Many of the buildings were made of wood and collapsed after the initial earthquake but a subsequent fire burned down half of the city of Toyooka and killed 8 percent of the population. The Osaka Mainichi was the only English daily newspaper published in Japan, owned, controlled and edited by Japanese.
