1925-D 5C MS66 NGC
1925-D 5C MS66 NGC. Entirely unlike the typical 1925-D Buffalo nickel, this example is sharply struck with exceptional detail. In A Guide Book of Buffalo and Jefferson Nickels, David Bowers writes that 3% of this issue comes with a full strike while another 20% are seen with a sharp strike. His observations are based on more than 50 years experience in the numismatic marketplace. Our own experience, over a somewhat shorter period of time, indicates that less than 1% of this issue has a full strike, and perhaps 10% have a sharp strike.
While strike plays a certain role in grading, only 11 MS66 coins have been certified by NGC and PCGS combined. With the Bowers observation that only 23% appear sharply or fully struck, only three or four pieces qualify. This example is one such coin. The date is bold, each letter of LIBERTY is fully defined without the slightest evidence of merging into the rim. The bison's tail is completely outlined but not fully detailed. Other reverse detail are essentially full and sharp. Both sides have soft, frosty luster with exceptional lilac and blue color, framed by peripheral gold toning.
About 15 years ago, we handled a small hoard (a hoardlet) of 1924-D and 1925-D Buffalo nickels that had been saved by the Connecticut State Library. While this hoard changed the overall availability of the two issues, Premium Gem pieces were not represented. This is only the third MS66 example that we have handled since 1993. Census: 8 in 66, 0 finer (8/07).

Coin Engraver: James E.
