1925 50C Stone Mountain MS68 PCGS. Golden-brown, mauve, olive, and sky-blue colors grace this lustrous and beautifully preserved Superb Gem. Although there are several Civil War-themed types, only the Stone Mountain is fully devoted to the south. In contrast, the Antietam and Gettysburg types commemorate both sides of the conflict. The Stone Mountain issue was produced to fund a massive mountain carving, directed by Gutzon Borglum. Borglum later abandoned the project to carve Mount Rushmore, however, the Stone Mountain carving eventually resumed and was completed and dedicated in 1970. More than 1.3 million pieces were struck, the highest production for a Silver Commemorative issue aside from the 1893 Columbian Half. The bulk of the issue entered circulation, and collector mishandling over subsequent decades has diminished the number of high grade survivors. As of (1/05), neither PCGS nor NGC has certified any examples in finer grades. Population: 6 in 68, 0 finer (1/05).
From the Bruce Scher #1 All-Time PCGS Registry Set. Lot:4181
