The frequent disputes between Gutzon Borglum, the artist originally hired to plan and carve the memorial at Stone Mountain, and the various heads of the Stone Mountain Confederate Monumental Association took on soap-opera proportions as the two parties became more estranged. February and March 1925 saw the cliffhanger, wherein the association fired the artist, who retaliated by destroying his models and fleeing to North Carolina. Under Augustus Lukeman, the replacement sculptor, work foundered, and progress on Stone Mountain stopped amid accusations of financial mismanagement. A smaller version of the Stone Mountain Confederate Memorial would not open until 1970.
On this captivating and strongly lustrous coin, deep ruby, bronze, and emerald patina graces the peripheral zones, while the powder-blue and lilac centers have tiny glints of silver-white. The surfaces are smooth and surprisingly distraction-free. When this example is placed next to a "mere" Gem, the difference is clear, and the overwhelming eye appeal of this MS68 becomes even more apparent. When this piece was last offered by Heritage in January 2005, the cataloger believed that it was "destined for the finest collection," and one need only look at the other pieces in this sale to know that the prediction came true. Population: 6 in 68, 0 finer (2/07).
From The Cary & Cheryl Porter Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
