1925 50C Stone Mountain MS68 NGC. Certain scandals aside, the eminently forgettable President Warren G. Harding is most notable for dying in office. In navigating the Stone Mountain commemorative half dollar through Congress, the bill's sponsors declared that it would be dedicated to the memory of the recently deceased statesman. As various rejected iterations of the half dollar design traveled from Gutzon Borglum to the Commission of Fine Arts and back, the tribute to Harding (a nod to the Louisiana Purchase/McKinley dollar?) became less and less apparent, and in the final version, neither his name nor his likeness appears on either side.
Shimmering luster, slightly more potent on the reverse, graces each side of this richly toned representative. The obverse exhibits mottled burgundy, apple-green, and silver-gray patina, while the reverse displays reddish-gold and greenish-gray with a diagonal swath of milky color at the center. Only 10 examples have been graded at MS68 by NGC, with none finer (11/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
