1925 50C Lexington MS68 PCGS. The obverse device labeled Concord Minute-Man is a close copy of Daniel C. French's Grand Concord Man statue, commonly called the Minute-Man, at Concord, Massachusetts. This statue depicts one of the volunteer soldiers taking part in the battle of Lexington and Concord that began the Revolutionary War on April 19, 1775; specifically a farmer leaving his coat on his plow, ready to leave for the battlefront at a minute's notice, musket in hand, presumably awaiting the call to arms by the bells in the Old Belfry, the reverse device on the coin.
High grade commemoratives often derive much of their grade from original and spectacular toning. This coin is no exception, in that is displays magnificent, original shadings of rich blue-green, amber. and sunset-golden that gradually deepen in tone toward the borders on each side. The underlying mint luster is full and very frosty throughout, with one small, barely visible contact mark in the right reverse field under the first N of SESQUICENTENNIAL. While common enough in lower grades, Superb Gem Lexingtons are very seldom seen. This specimen represents the single finest known example thus far graded by either service (1/05).
From the Bruce Scher #1 All-Time PCGS Registry Set. Lot:4162
