<B>1925 $20 MS67 PCGS.</B></I> The 1925 double eagle is readily obtainable in grades through MS66. This high availability results in part from the high original mintage of 2.83 million pieces, as well as to their long-term residence in foreign banks during the domestic melts of the 1930s. David Bowers (2004) says that "...foreign hoards provided the source for most examples in the hands of numismatists and investors." Superb Gem examples, such as the one we offer here, run counter to the ready obtainability of lower Mint State coins. Indeed, PCGS and NGC report a paltry 11 1925 double eagles, and none finer!<BR> This specimen displays appealing attributes that are characteristic of the date. Exceptionally well preserved, frost-like surfaces are awash in coruscating luster and gorgeous peach-gold patination and light green undertones. Impeccably struck design features exhibit sharp detail in the Capitol building, on Liberty's face, fingers, and toes, and throughout the eagle's plumage. The aficionado of high-grade Saint-Gaudens coinage will not want to miss out on one of the finest known 1925 double eagles.
