This well struck example is surprisingly free of large bagmarks for the MS64 grade. Close attention reveals a few wispy handling marks on both sides, but the luster is bright with swirling cartwheel glow dancing over both sides. Orange-gold colors are well blended over the nice surface features. The 1924-S double eagle was once considered a rarity in the Saint-Gaudens series, and ranked within the circle of luminaries such as the 1920-S, 1921, 1927-D and 1933. The discovery of many pieces in European bank vaults has changed the rarity ranking of the '24-S to where it is now regarded as a semi-key issue. It is, on the other hand, a condition rarity with most survivors grading no finer than the present grade level.
