1924-S $20 MS64 NGC. While the 1924-S is not known for exceptional luster quality, the present near-Gem is certainly above average in this regard. Rich mint frost swirls around both sides in the virtual absence of distracting abrasions, and the original orange-gold color highlights this effect. Both sides are uncommonly well struck for the type, although we note some isolated softness of detail over the ER in LIBERTY that is the result of a die defect. The latter feature is common to more than a few survivors of this issue. The 1924-S is not the prime rarity that it was once heralded as, but it is still a challenging coin to locate in all grades. Examples that grade finer than MS63 are conditionally rare. One should not underestimate the importance of the present MS64 representative after looking at current NGC and PCGS population data. The paucity of certified MS65 examples (only eight are known to those two services, 10/02) suggests that the MS64 population is inflated to one degree or another by multiple resubmissions of the same coins. In fact, the present example is certainly at the upper reaches of the MS64 level, and, were it not for a few reverse scrapes over the eagle's wing feathers, it may have secured a full Gem rating. From the Ashland City Collection.
