1924-S<10C> MS66 Full Bands NGC. The poor quality of most 1924-S dimes is attributed by Lange in his Complete Guide to Mercury Dimes book to result from the prolonged use of worn dies brought on by budget cutting throughout all divisions of the federal government in the 1920s, including the Mint. The author further theorizes that reverse dies were particularly targeted, as they could be used beyond their year of manufacture, unlike dated obverse dies. To lend credence to this theory, he points to the radiant pattern of metal flow lines and distorted lettering that usually occurs on the reverse of these coins. Upon close examination of the example in the current sale, it would appear that both dies were of above average quality. The design features, including the lettering, are sharply defined. The only striking flaws that seem to fit the typical '24-S dime profile occur in the feet of the I and the left upright of the M in DIME, both of which are drawn to the rim. Both sides are toned in a melange of lavender, sea-green, olive, and aqua-blue. Lustrous surfaces reveal just a couple of small ticks at Mercury's neck. Population: 1 in 66, 0 finer (10/05).
